Hygiene Visits for Your Best Health
We recommend teeth cleanings by our hygienist at every six-month visit. No matter how meticulous you may be in brushing and flossing, there are always certain areas that are missed. This allows plaque to build up, which hardens into tartar. Then brushing will no longer be able to remove it from tooth surfaces. If tartar goes below the gumline, you risk the serious problems of gum infection. Research has shown that gum disease contributes to heart disease, diabetes, and strokes. Please keep your teeth their cleanest with the help of our hygienist to stay healthy!

Gum Dieases Can Mean Losing Teeth
Most teeth are lost due to periodontal (gum) disease. The general assumption is that decay is the reason, but gum disease can show little to no symptoms right up to the point of losing your teeth. Common signs of gum disease are bleeding gums when brushing or flossing, and loose teeth. If treated in the early stages, nonsurgical means can correct the problem. Otherwise, surgery may be the only option.
Far-Reaching Health Effects from Gum Disease
Medical research has revealed a startling discovery: gum infections can have an effect on
serious health conditions such as heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. Dentists are now regarding gum disease as a much more serious problem than merely losing your teeth. Even worse, the American Dental Association reports that nearly 80% of Americans have this type of infection. If this were a medical condition, it would be considered a national epidemic!
The bacteria in the gums enter the bloodstream, reaching certain organs and potentially causing them harm. The American Academy of Periodontology reports that "studies found periodontal infection may contribute to the development of heart disease, increase the risk of premature, underweight births, and pose a serious threat to people whose health is already compromised due to diabetes and respiratory diseases."
Taking Care of Gum Disease
We recommend at the first signs of bleeding gums or loose or shifting teeth to come to our office. Early treatment and improved daily dental hygiene can take care of this infection without surgery. Once the disease is advanced, surgery may be the only option. Both surgical and nonsurgical methods are usually covered under most dental insurance.
What Happens When You Lose a Tooth
Other problems can result from losing even a single tooth. Adjacent teeth can start to
loosen, with the possibility of losing another tooth. Your chewing is not as efficient as it should be, resulting in the absorption of fewer nutrients. As it becomes more difficult to chew without full upper and lower teeth, foods that are easier to chew but less nutritious may be consumed more often. This often results in weight gain.
Your speech may become embarrassing, with certain words difficult for others to understand. You may start to look older than your years with deteriorating bone in the facial structure making your cheeks appear sunken.
We suggest replacing as many teeth as you have missing with dental implants. They come up through the gums, giving them a very natural appearance – as if they grew there – and they function just like your own teeth. You will be pleased to recapture a full smile and eat every type of food you want.
Defeat Gum Disease Painlessly
Dr. Coleman is pleased to offer her patients a powerful weapon in the fight against
gum disease. It's called ARESTIN™. It comes in powder form and contains very tiny microspheres that are not visible to the eye. These microspheres deliver a time-released antibiotic directly to the site of the infection (the spaces between the gums and teeth). ARESTIN kills the bacteria that cause gum disease. The best part is that it's all painless!

Dental Implant Restorations for a Perfect Smile
Have a beautiful, full smile with dental implants! No matter how many or where you have missing teeth, dental implants can be placed to once again give you a great smile. They look very natural – as if they grew there! This is because they come up through the gums, just like your original teeth did.
Those with no teeth can also benefit, because implants can secure your dentures permanently so there will be no more worries of slipping and tilting when eating or speaking.
First, a titanium post is implanted in the dental arch by an oral surgeon. Then Dr. Coleman creates a natural-looking restoration and places it over the post. You will be impressed with your new smile from this restoration technique!

Relax for Every Type of Treatment with Sedation Dentistry
We understand how some people have fears and anxiety over dental work. Shots, drilling, and unusual smells add to the tension. We offer relief for these challenges with conscious sedation dentistry. We are very pleased to have this available for our patients.
By taking one pill an hour before you arrive at our office, you will begin to feel relaxed. As you sit in the dental chair you reach a deeper level of relaxation to the point where you are unaware of the work being performed but still able to answer questions when asked. You will be monitored throughout the procedure and when it is completed, a friend drives you home. In about an hour, you will be back to normal.
This means you are not completely knocked out, as if you were having surgery. This type of sedation does not let you feel any of the treatment, but you still maintain a level of consciousness. Some people have an even greater fear of being "put under." Their fear is about losing complete control of their perception. But this advancement in sedation is a happy medium between unawareness of procedure and interaction with your surroundings.
This type of sedation also works well for those who are resistant to anesthesia. They simply can't get numb. And for those who don't have time for repeated visits, conscious sedation lets patients have more work accomplished in just one visit.
We also offer nitrous oxide, known as laughing gas. This takes the edge off during the procedure, but wears off quickly and allows you to drive yourself home shortly after your treatment.
